Tinubu appoints Disu Acting IGP as Egbetokun exits

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has on Tuesday appointed Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), Tunji Disu, as Acting Inspector-General of Police following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun.

The appointment, which takes immediate effect, comes after the President Tinubu accepted Egbetokun’s resignation letter earlier on Tuesday.

The outgoing police IG, in the letter cited pressing family considerations requiring his full attention.

The Presidency, in confirming the development, noted that President Tinubu expressed appreciation for Egbetokun’s decades of service to the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and his efforts to reinforce the country’s internal security framework during his tenure.

Appointed in June 2023 for a four-year term expected to run until June 2027 under the amended Police Act, Egbetokun’s departure marks a significant shift in the leadership of the Force.

Tinubu’s decision to elevate Disu in an acting capacity is seen as a strategic move aimed at ensuring continuity amid prevailing security challenges nationwide.

The president, according to the statement, is confident that Disu’s operational experience and leadership record would provide steady direction for the Force at a critical time.

In line with the provisions of the Police Act 2020, President Tinubu is expected to convene the Nigeria Police Council (NPC) to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General.

Following that process, his nomination will be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation.

The Presidency, in the statement, reaffirmed Tinubu’s commitment to strengthening national security institutions, enhancing professionalism within the Nigeria Police Force, and ensuring accountability in the discharge of constitutional responsibilities.
